Abstract

The emergence of the internet and social media has fundamentally reshaped journalism, challenging traditional news organizations to adapt their production practices. This qualitative study, employing grounded theory methodology, explores how journalists from traditional media organizations experience producing news content on social media platforms. Through in-depth interviews with ten journalists from various news organizations in Indonesia, the research identifies four theoretical propositions regarding journalistic content production on social media: (1) creative teams assist in producing social media content, (2) news content is distributed through transmedia and cross-media approaches, (3) news production has become inherently multimedia, and (4) journalists and news organizations persist in adhering to journalistic principles and ethics. The findings reveal that while social media platforms introduce vulnerabilities such as disinformation and intensified competition, they simultaneously enable richer multimedia storytelling through transmedia and cross-media distribution. News organizations increasingly leverage live streaming and podcast features available on social platforms. Despite these transformations, journalists maintain their commitment to journalistic standards, utilizing newsroom mechanisms and editorial oversight to ensure accuracy, balance, and accountability in every story they produce. This research contributes to understanding the dynamics of contemporary journalism in the digital ecosystem and offers practical insights for news organizations navigating the evolving media landscape.
